K.I.S.S. New Years Resolution
Dec 31, 2018K.I.S.S. (keep it simply silly:-)
New Years resolutions are made by millions. Unfortunately many are made knowing or expecting them to fail.
Why is that?
Because of the many failed resolutions of the past?
The top 10 resolutions are
1 Lose Weight
2 Getting Organized
3 Spend Less, Save More
4 Enjoy Life to the Fullest
5 Staying Fit and Healthy
6 Learn Something Exciting
7 Quit Smoking
8 Help Others in Their Dreams
9 Fall in Love
10 Spend More Time with Family
These are all great resolutions.
So why is it so many of these resolutions / goals are made only verbally?
Do people not know a written goal and proper planning stand a better chance?
Are they saying they want to set and reach a specific goal but really don’t.
One study shows that within one week of making a New Year's resolution, one quarter- that's 25 out of 100- have already given up.
Sadly, after six months that number is down to 46%, less than half of the goals set are still in motion.
According to Wikipedia: (only 12 out of 100 succeed in meeting their goals-here are the results)
The most common reason for participants failing their New Years' Resolutions was setting themselves unrealistic goals (35%), while 33% didn't keep track of their progress and a further 23% forgot about it. About one in 10 respondents claimed they made too many resolutions.
A 2007 study by Richard Wiseman from the University of Bristol involving 3,000 people showed that 88% of those who set New Year resolutions fail, despite the fact that 52% of the study's participants were confident of success at the beginning. Men achieved their goal 22% more often when they engaged in goal setting, (a system where small measurable goals are being set; such as, a pound a week, instead of saying "lose weight"), while women succeeded 10% more when they made their goals public and got support from their friends.
What is a resolution?
Something you do just because everyone else does it?
No-no-no
It's the act of finding an answer or solution to a conflict, problem, etc. : the act of resolving something.
It is a goal of something in which we would like to accomplish.
So, once we decide what we want to solve, how do we come up with a solution?
Set a goal or series of goals on how to accomplish what it is you want.
Write it out: The simple act of writing down your goals is important because of the accountability that comes with writing them down. Writing a goal is an action, one of many required in accomplishing goals, but without writing them down, there is nothing to build on.
Plan it: For each goal create a time frame. Write down the day, month and year by which you will complete the goal.
For each goal write down what you need to achieve that goal. Skill, education, career advancement or change, finances, or resources.
For each goal write down the actions that you will need to take in order to complete the GOAL and the steps required to complete each action.
It was long ago I gave up on resolutions. I too made them only in the form of words. Words that were soon forgotten.
I found by proper goal setting and planning throughout the year I did not have a need to set additional goals on New Year's day unless it just so happened to be something new that came about at that time of year- Maybe a reflection on the past year and the things I wanted to change, improve, shed myself of or add to my life- But I certainly did not make one just to make one, nor did I only make it verbally.
Now I’m not saying that you shouldn’t have resolutions or make goals at the beginning of the year, but if you do, make sure it is something tangible, something you truly desire, something you are willing to work towards and something you will put down on paper, set a plan in to motion and see it through.
If you would like to share any of your goals for 2019 or beyond, please do so in the comments below.
Accountability is also very important. By sharing it with someone, you have inadvertently made yourself accountable. Funny how that works... But it does. And then check in from time to time and I make note of what needs adjusted, it's ok to adjust, part of the process.
If you want an Accountability Partner to check in with, please feel free to use this BLOG and we can put it on the calendar so we can compare our progress.
I wish each and every one of you great success in making and meeting your goals for this new year.
